Dr.JIMMY McJAMERSON |

Dr.
Jimmy McJamerson is currently an Associate Professor of
History at Grambling State University. With a B. A. in
History from GSU and an M. A. in History in African
American History from Ohio University, he completed the
Ph. D. at Union Institute and University in Cincinnati,
Ohio in African American History. Among his honors are
recipient of the “Slade Award” for the top poem in the
Griot Journal for the Southern Conference on African
American Studies; citation as a “New Businessman” in
Emerge Magazine (1995); and NAFEO Distinguished
Alumni Member Award (1989). McJamerson’s publications
include his dissertation titled Grambling State
University: The Legacy, History and Spirit Through the
Experiences of Its Pioneers and Builders.
Additional publications are The Workbook to Accompany
Success Runs in Our Race (2007, Frasernet, in
press), On the Shoulders of Our Ancestors: Teaching
African-American History Through Historical Poetic Verse
(1999) and the first in a three-volume poetry series
titled Transformed, Moved and Fixed: Spiritual
Blessings (2000). His chapters in educational books
include “Enhancing Literacy Skills and Self Esteem
Through Whole Language” in Developing Literacy Skills
Across the Curriculum: Practical Approaches, Creative
Models, Strategies and Resources (2001). Jaggers,

McJamerson’s creative works include four poem print
collections: “New Psalms” Spiritual Collection 1999,
Black Greek Collection 1997, Masonic Collection 1997,
and Positive Black Images Collection 1990. Professional
presentations include “Using Folklore as an Approach to
Enhancing Academic Skills and Citizenship” at Benedict
College’s Service-Learning Program in Columbia, South
Carolina, 2002, and “On the Shoulders of Our Ancestors:
Using Poetry to Teach History” at the National
Association for African American Studies, Houston, TX
1999. As a 33˚ Prince Hall Mason and Shriner, a member
of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., McJamerson has
coordinated numerous programs for university, church,
and community projects. For example, he was a founding
member of the Grambling “Juneteenth” Heritage Festival.
McJamerson is married to Dr. Nanthalia W. McJamerson and
is the father of Nicole McJamerson-Kearney and Jimmy
McJamerson II.

Dr. Nanthalia McJamerson

Dr.
Nanthalia McJamerson is a Professor of Education at
Grambling State University. She received a B. S. degree
in Business Education at Grambling State University, M.
Ed. in Counselor Education at Indiana University of
Pennsylvania and Ph. D. in Educational Psychology at
Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr.
McJamerson is an author and editor of educational books,
including Developing Literacy Skills Across the
Curriculum and Files of Promise for Conquering
Test Anxiety. Book chapters she published include
“Fun House Mirrors: At-Promise vs. At-Risk Perceptions
of Urban Students” in Issues in Urban Education,
Duhon, G. (Ed.), “The Role of Biography and History in
the Prevention of Conflict and Promotion of Success” in
Counseling for the New Millennium, Duhon, G. and
Manson, T. (Eds.) and “Immunity to the Immaculate
Perception: An Aesthetic Education Approach to
Developing Critical Thinking” in Interdisciplinary
Approaches to Teacher Education, all published in
Lewiston, New York: Edwin Mellen Press. Dr.
McJamerson’s most recent poetry book is titled
Contrary to Rumor, I’m Wonderfully Made. She has
made presentations at numerous conferences and served as
consultant for the National Education Association as
well as for several Louisiana school districts.
Additionally, she is Co-Director of the GSU LA GEAR UP
Summer Learning Camps. In partnership, she and her
husband, Dr. Jimmy McJamerson, provide educational
seminars, motivational speaking, empowerment books and
inspirational gifts.
